Herr Mannelig
A very popular folk instrument in
the Norse and Scandinavian
countries is the “Tagleharpe.” The
origins of the instrument comes out
of northern Mongolia with a similar
instrument called the “Morin
Khuur.”
The tagleharpe and the Morin
Khuur are precursors to the violin.
Audio-Video-Song:
Herr Mannelig, “Sir Mann-Kind”
Earnie Taft starts this one off with his
fiddle to provide that “tagleharpe” sound,
and then later adds his mandolin.
I translated the lyrics into English from the
Swedish and Russian versions, and I used
an Irish-tuned, low octave mandolin (aka
“Irish Bouzouki”), a Kerry Mezzo C whistle,
an MK1 Low-C whistle, a Bodhran, and
voices.
