Battle of the Somme  
KDM Broadside Continued …  
The second assault took the Germans somewhat by surprised, and  
the British were able to advance some 6,000 yards into enemy  
territory to occupy the village of Longeval.  
By the end of July, the Germans lost 160,000 soldiers, and the British  
and French forces lost more than 200,000 men.  
And yet, the Battles continued. By the time the Battle of the Somme  
was halted on November 18th, both sides suffered staggering losses.  
More than three million soldiers had fought in those battles with more  
than one million killed or wounded.
